When is the best time to go to Jordan?

Traveling to Jordan is possible all year round! Thanks to the presence of two seas (the Red Sea and the Dead Sea), as well as the relief, the country is relatively spared from extreme climates, unlike its neighbors. Nevertheless, it enjoys almost constant sunshine!

As often, if you prefer mild temperatures, it is best to favor the shoulder seasons. Therefore, the best time to visit Jordan remains in the fall. In addition to a very favorable climate, there are fewer tourists, making your trip even more incredible! In spring, local school holidays lead to an increase in visitors. If you plan to go in April and May, make sure to book hotels well in advance to avoid any inconveniences.

Contrary to popular belief, summer is also a good time to visit Jordan. The heat is much more bearable than a European heatwave, and the crowds are fewer.

Despite the small size of the country, Jordan experiences a wide range of temperatures between the north and the south, all year round. Most of the time, it is 10°C warmer in Aqaba, by the Dead Sea, than in Amman. This is useful to know if you are traveling in winter or summer!

A true crossroads of civilizations, Jordan has many assets to offer visitors. In addition to its splendid archaeological sites, such as the rock city of Petra or the Roman city of Jerash, it has a beautiful natural heritage.

When is the best time to visit Jordan to fully enjoy nature?

  • For diving, the best period is from April to November. Known to be a diver's paradise, the Red Sea is full of treasures that you can discover while snorkeling or with scuba diving.
  • For hiking in Jordan, autumn and spring are the ideal periods: temperatures are mild and nature is magnificent. In summer, opt for the high mountains for cooler temperatures.
  • For enjoying the beach and swimming in perfectly warm water, visit Jordan between April and October.

The only time of the year to avoid traveling to Jordan is during Ramadan. This lasts for a month, changing each year, so make sure to check the dates in advance. During this period, restaurants and shops are closed all day, which can make the stay a bit problematic.

Climate and Weather in Jordan

Located in the Middle East, between Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq, the climate in Jordan is desertic, tempered by the presence of the sea. In the western part of the country, in the Jordan Valley, one could even say it is Mediterranean.

In terms of precipitation, rainfall is very low across the entire territory, but slightly more pronounced in the western mountains.

Like in Europe, Jordan experiences four distinct seasons:

Winter

If you plan to visit Jordan in winter, it is best to favor the Gulf of Aqaba, by the Red Sea. With temperatures above 20°C, even in the middle of January, it is the perfect destination to escape the freezing cold of Europe! Although a bit cooler, the shores of the Dead Sea are also very pleasant places to spend holidays and relax.

Elsewhere in the country, especially in the mountainous areas, winters are cold and dry. In Amman, the capital, or in Petra, snowfall is not uncommon. If you still plan to travel to these regions in the middle of winter, make sure to bring warm clothing and book hotels with heating (which is not so common!).

Spring and Autumn

The weather in Jordan in spring is absolutely perfect. Between March and May, temperatures are very mild and the sun shines guaranteed. Nevertheless, bring a sweater to cover up in the evenings.

In terms of landscapes, it is undoubtedly the most beautiful season to travel to Jordan: the countryside is green and dotted with splendid almond trees in bloom and black anemones.

Some thunderstorms and sand-laden winds can occur at the end of April and beginning of May. This meteorological phenomenon colors the sky with golden hues, giving a magical dimension to the surrounding landscapes.

The only real drawback of this period is the crowds: during Easter holidays and long weekends in May, it can be difficult to find accommodation, or even a guide for hikes and visits. Remember to book everything in advance!

With a climate similar to that of spring, autumn in Jordan is the ideal season to visit the country. Plus: the sea water has warmed up all summer, so the temperatures are more pleasant. Even though the landscapes are less green, the crowds are much smaller, making it the best time for a stay.

Summer

Of course, it is hot in Jordan in the middle of summer. However, the heat is dry and temperatures drop at night. Moreover, as most of the country is located at high altitudes, it is really only in the desert, especially in Wadi Rum, that it can be challenging.

In Petra and Amman, temperatures range between 30 and 35°C during the day, so visits are entirely possible, especially if you prefer the morning and late afternoon.

By the sea, the water remains refreshing, allowing for a very pleasant seaside stay, between walks along the coast and swims.

The significant advantage of this period is that there are far fewer people and prices are very affordable.
